he Benefits of Trace Minerals in Human Health
Trace minerals, though required by the body in very small amounts, are integral to the maintenance of various body processes and overall health. These essential micronutrients, including iron, zinc, copper, selenium, boron, iodine, manganese, molybdenum, chromium and vanadium are indispensable for numerous biochemical and physiological functions.
Because of this, adding a quality trace mineral supplement is one of, if not the most important supplement to take. Even better, when trace minerals are added to major minerals, especially calcium and magnesium.
Most mineral supplements combine only a few trace minerals. The reason for so many low-quality mineral supplements is likely the cost and complexity of making these. The best supplements combine these minerals with a full multi-vitamin and multi-antioxidant such as my Cell eXtra. Read more below.
The most important trace minerals[1] are:
Zinc
Zinc is fundamental for immune function, wound healing, DNA and protein synthesis, and cell division. It is also crucial for proper taste and smell. Zinc deficiency can lead to impaired growth, a weakened immune response, and delayed wound healing. The most important role of zinc is the formation of the powerful antioxidant super oxide dismutase (SOD).
Copper
Copper aids in iron absorption, red blood cell formation, and the maintenance of healthy nerves, blood vessels, bones, and the immune system. It also plays a role in energy production and antioxidative defences. Copper, like zinc is needed for SOD.
Selenium
Selenium is a powerful antioxidant that helps protect cells from oxidative stress. Selenium is needed to make glutathione peroxidase (GPx) once of the most important cell protectors and detoxifiers.
Of note, GPx is needed to detoxify the liver from paracetamol. I have grave concerns about potential liver damage to those who regularly take paracetamol without a selenium supplement. Those with liver issues need to be especially careful. Selenium is essential for thyroid hormone metabolism and immune function. Adequate selenium intake is linked to a reduced risk of certain cancers and heart diseases.
Manganese
Manganese is involved in bone formation, blood clotting, and reducing inflammation. It also plays a role in carbohydrate and lipid metabolism and the regulation of blood sugar levels. The most important role of Manganese is to make Manganese SOD; this resides within our cell mitochondria to help neutralise free radicals that are formed by making energy. Think of this like the catalytic converter in a car exhaust as it cleans up toxic byproducts from the engine.
Boron
Boron is essential for maintaining strong bones and improving the body’s ability to absorb magnesium and calcium. It also plays a crucial role in enhancing cognitive function and reducing inflammation throughout the body.
Molybdenum
Molybdenum is an essential trace element that plays a crucial role in human health. It is a key component of several enzymes that are necessary for the metabolism of sulphur-containing amino acids and the detoxification of harmful substances in the body.
Chromium
Chromium enhances the action of insulin and is important for macronutrient metabolism and blood sugar regulation. It aids in the maintenance of normal glucose levels and plays a role in weight management.
Vanadium
Vanadium is an essential trace mineral that plays a role in bone growth and the regulation of blood sugar levels. While it is required in very small amounts, its presence is crucial for the proper functioning of several enzymatic processes in the human body.
In conclusion, trace minerals, despite being required in minute quantities, are essential for numerous bodily functions. Ensuring an adequate intake of these micronutrients through a balanced diet and a quality multi-mineral such as Cell eXtra can significantly contribute to overall health and well-being.
[1] I have omitted discussion about
iron and
iodine. These should be excluded from multi-supplements and need to be taken under close supervision from a health practitioner.
